Precious Moments Cake

It was my husband’s grandmother’s birthday the other day and we all went over for a party at their house. I made all the food and the cake. It was fun. I had a great time figuring out how to paint a cake, and then make it all smooth.

So here is what I did.

Step 1: bake the cake
Step 2: cover with buttercream (the best icing ever except maybe cream cheese icing on carrot cake)
Step 3: free-hand the precious moments design on the top of the cake

Step 4: let it dry so I can paint it
Step 5: make royal icing (powdered sugar + water)
Step 6: tint royal icing with a bunch of different colors
Step 7: paint nervously on the cake with the newly invented method of getting color onto a cake.
Step 8: get really messy with my son

Step 9: make more royal icing
Step 10: pour it over the whole cake
Step 11: wait a relatively small amount of time for the royal icing to dry.
That part was awesome. It didn’t take long at all! And I was all geared up to wait 8 hours or so.
Step 12: make and tiny more buttercream in the same colors as the paint
Step 13: outline everything and add other fun details like birds and stuff.

So much fun.
